LEMIS maintains a network with an electronic mail system the use of its personnel and
other authorized persons who have accounts @lemis.com. Use of this mail system
is permitted to other persons under the following circumstances:
-
When explicitly allowed by LEMIS in writing.
-
From personal friends and acquaintances of LEMIS personnel.
-
In reply to genuine mail sent from a LEMIS mail address.
-
As personal email addressed to specific LEMIS persons.
-
Email from mailing lists to which LEMIS personnel have explicitly subscribed.
-
On-topic mail to mailing lists supported by LEMIS.
-
All other use of the LEMIS mail system is prohibited. The class of prohibited mail
specifically includes the following categories of mail:
-
Bulk email of all kinds.
-
Mail with forged origins, including mail which might otherwise be
acceptable.
-
Offensive or obscene mail.
-
Unsolicited private mail promoting business deals.
-
Useless messages reporting abuse. This includes specifically messages from toy
“virus” scanners which supply no information suitable for tracing the
offender. The only effect of such messages is to add to our already considerable
workload.
-
Wherever possible, LEMIS will prosecute offenders.
-
In addition, each case of abuse of the LEMIS mail system will incur a charge of
Australian $5,000 and costs from the perpetrator. The height of this sum is based on
the current difficulty of enforcing payment. The costs include the costs of any
followups necessary.
-
Nuisance messages, such as useless “virus” messages, incur a handling
charge of Australian $100.
-
If it is not possible to identify the perpetrator of the offence, or it is not
possible to exact payment, LEMIS will make the originating ISP responsible for the
payment of the charges.
LEMIS owns the domain name lemis.com. Any abuse of this name represents forgery,
a criminal offence in most countries. Use of this name on forged emails seriously damages
LEMIS' reputation. As a result, each reported incident will incur a charge of Australian
$25,000.00 plus costs. Where possible, criminal charges will be made. Where ISPs are not
prepared to divulge the identity of the perpetrator, LEMIS will make the ISP responsible
for these costs.

LEMIS will pay a reward of up to 80% of the proceeds of civil action against parties
abusing this AUP to people who materially help recover these costs.
