The Swedish word “Husfru” translates variously as “housekeeper” or “matron”. In the past I have confused it with the German word “Hausfrau”, which means housewife. In any case, “husfrusill” translates as something like “housekeeper's herring”. This recipe comes from “Bonniers Kokbok”, one of the best reasons I can think of to learn Swedish.
quantity | ingredient | step
250g | Matjes filets | 1 | ||
1 dl | mayonnaise | 2 | ||
100 g | pickles | 2 | ||
20 ml | chili sauce, ketchup type | 2
100 g | yellow (Spanish) onion | 2
1 g | chopped dill | 2 | ||
0.5 g | ground black pepper | 2
The original recipe just writes “pickles”; we used pickled cucumbers.
Chop the matjes into cubes about 5 to 10 mm on a side.
Chop the onion and dill. Mix all the ingredients and pour over the matjes. Leave in the fridge for a day or two before serving cold.
