For the first couple of years in Dereel we
had a shade area in the north-east of the garden that we affectionately called the
Cathedral. Unfortunately all the trees died, and by
late 2011 none were left except for some saplings that we had planted in their place.
Other parts of the garden changed, however, and two birches in the east have become so bushy
that we can create a small shade area underneath them, at least in summer months. Here's
