Christmas Day! Down to see what presents I had. I had hoped that Father Christmas would
bring me a Meccano number 10 set, in which case I had agreed with my father that he (my
father) would give me a chemistry set.
No such luck. Father Christmas brought me a chemistry set. So my father didn't have to
give me anything. Still, the chemistry set was absorbing, and I spent all day playing with
it.
The chemistry set continued to absorb me, and I remained fascinated with chemistry
until about 1970. This day was a turning point in my life, though I didn't seem to have
learn that if ... then ... else should always have an else
clause.

whether you'd prefer me not to mention your name. Otherwise
I'll assume that it's OK to do so.
